Woke to the sound of bird song at 6.00 after a good night's sleep. It was overcast with a little fine rain as we pulled off at 9.00 sharp, the earliest we've been up and away this trip !
Made our way towards Drumnadrochit and Loch Ness , stopping at the village for a look around the tacky crapy tourist shops, fortunately there was only one ! Then around the corner to Urquhart Castle to be greeted by herds of tourists and a whopping 9 quid each to get in. We turned round and headed for Inverness with the idea that the southern minor road around the lock would be nicer.
We stopped at Inverness and stocked up with food and water before finding our way onto the B852 , a mostly single track road that runs the length of the lock. The clouds lifted and the sun tried to break through as we pulled in for lunch on a deserted car park overlooking the Loch. It was a good choice to turn around and use this road, beautiful views and hardly any traffic.
Continuing we came across a Scottish forestry commission site with walks up to a view point overlooking the Loch. We pulled in and booted up, it was now 3.00 pm so I was a bit concerned about getting anywhere today till Angie reminded that we haven't got to be anywhere , still getting used to this retirement lark.
The walk was only a mile or so through the most beautiful scotts pine with moss so thick it was like walking on deep sponge. Wild flowers everywhere and views across the yellow gorse to the Loch below. We decided to walk off the route and extended the walk by about 4 mile. Well worth it but by the time we got back about 5.30 I was totally knackered !
We got back onto the road to look for a spot for the night and as usual luck was on our side as within about 5 mile we had found another Scottish forestry commission picnic site by the river that allows overnight stops. We pulled in to the deserted site and enjoyed the sound of only the birds and the river while we ate supper. Perfect !
Miles today 74 - will we ever get home ?
