Thick heavy cloud as far as you could see this morning but at least it was still dry.
We continued down to the village of Applecross, a pretty village , now home to holiday lets that would have once been a fishing village. Then came the climb back up over the mountains along the usual single track road with passing places, I think the route was used by cattle farmers as it's often referred to as the pass of the cattle . Started out not too steep but soon became a second and first gear job with interesting drops ! After reaching the summit and beginning the decent the view that opend up was more like a road in the Alps. Steep and twisting the road could be seen zig zagging down the moutain side with only a bit of steel barrier to keep you from certain death . Then the inevitable happened a couple of cars coming up and nowhere to pass, I quickly ticked into a rough bit of ground away from the edge and left them to the tricky bit of getting past ! Safely down we pulled in and Angie had a chat with the kids as she managed to get the first good signal for a while. I chatted with an elderly lady who was about to make the trip up that we had just finished, on her own in a motorhome. She asked if it was okay and I said she should be fine !
Back on the main road we stooped just before the Kyle of Lochalsh and took in views of the Loch with the Skye bridge in the distance. Soon over the bridge we went in search of water following a sign for 7 mile down a single track road to a nature reserve only to find the water not drinkable !
Over an hour later and back on the main road we stopped to take in the views of the Cuillins, a dramatic mountain range shrouded in low cloud.
Getting late we stopped at Portree for a chip shop supper before continuing in search of a night stop. We came across
Kilt rock waterfall, a waterfall with a sheer drop off a cliff face of hundreds of feet to the sea, thought about staying but it was still busy. We carried out for a while longer following the coast road when I spotted a dead end road come up on the satnav, taking a right turn in the village of Staffin we found the perfect spot right on the sea front with only a couple of other campers for company.
