Woke early around 6 is just in time to see the sun pop up over a distant mountain and light up the loch in a lovely warm glow, without so much as a breath of wind the loch was mirror smooth. I got dressed quickly and grabbed my camera only to find the battery was dead ! Took my phone instead while wishing I'd packed the inverter and charger.
The phone camera sort of captured the view and within a few minutes the moment had gone as a gentle breeze started to ripple the loch surface.
We packed up and got going at 8.30 as we wanted to explore the Scottish trust gardens at Geilstone. The journey was uneventful with light traffic though the scenary never stops to amaze me especially Glen Coe in the morning sun.
We found the site by 11.30 but I couldn't work out why the sat nav was telling us to continue on when the road sign pointed to the entrance. We then spent an enjoyable half hour looking around the house , built in the 1920s and designed my McIntosh. Then into the gardens, we sat looking at the small walled garden and both said how uninteresting it was. I reached for my phone to see find out more then realised we had visited the wrong place ! We had gone to the Hill House also owned by the Scottish Trust while the garden we wanted to see were 5 mile further down the road.
Back in the van and ten minutes later we found it. And what a garden it was. The house was closed to visitors but the gardens are the real reason to visit. Planted over two hundred years ago and improved by the last owner who passed it on to the trust in the 80s. It is a riot of colour with Azaleas and Rhododendrons flowering throughout the walled garden and behind it the woods. Impressive looking herbaceous borders show a promise of things to come and the refurbished glasshouse complete with potting shed is a delight taking me back to when I was an apprentice gardener in the 1970s.
We took out time and wondered about sitting in the sun to for a while breathing in the heady scent of the Azaleas.
By late afternoon it was time to get to the campsite, around an hour's drive away we didn't want to arrive too late.
Pulled up around 6 ish and pitched next to the loch almost in the same spot that we had been in nearly three weeks ago and the sun was still shinning!
Total miles today approx 110.
