Another warm night, slept without the need for sleeping bags. We had planned to spend the day sightseeing in Trogir and decided to get going early to beat the heat. It's an easy 3km walk along the seafront already filing up with sun worshipers and only 9.00. am !
Trogir was founded by the Greek colonists in the 3rd century BC. Throughout history it was occupied by the Romans, the Byzantines, the Hungarians, the Venetians and Napoleon. Culture and architecture flourished here in the Middle Ages; bulwarks and a tower were built at that time. Trogir is today on the UNESCO list of World Cultural Heritage as the best preserved Romanesque-Gothic town in Central Europe.
We had expected the town to be very busy but were pleasantly surprised to find it easy to move around.
The town is built on a small island and connected to the mainland by a couple of bridges, crossing the first Angie nearly had kittens as the bridge is designed to lift in two so as to let ships into the harbour. A lorry crossed at the same time as us causing the bridge to flex up and down, Angie was sure it was falling down !
We spent an hour in the markets before entering the walled part of the town. The architecture was stunning and well preserved, you can see how it has become a site of importance.
We found the main castle at the old entrance , paid the equivalent of a couple of pound to get in and climbed to the top of the tower. We found amazing views of the town stretching out and it became obvious why the spot had been chosen all those years ago, anyone wanting to attack would easily be seen.
Normally we avoid eating in such tourist areas as the food is usually bad and overpriced but we found a small restaurant hidden away down one of the many narrow alleyways that cross cross the town. Had a mixed grill and salad with drinks for the equivalent of £20, bargain and it was tasty.
The day was turning out to be another scorcher as we headed back to camp so we stopped off at a beach bar for a cool beer and watched the world go buy before having a bit of a paddle.
Picked up some provisions ready to get away early and sat at the tent eating supper under the olive trees , it really cant get any better than this, can it ?
