Can you believe it. Woke to very strong winds and thunder storms. Doesn't look like we will see much of this island on this holiday.
We hung around the town had breakfast and watched the sky for the odd glimpse of sun.
By midday it had blown over , the sun was out and it was into the mid twenties so we grabbed our gear and got going quick.
The strange thing about this place is the weather, you can be in red hot sun pop over the mountains and be in the cold with thick cloud. We climbed up towards the Lassithi Plato. Its a part of Crete that has not become to commercialised yet. Groups of small villages dotted around a plato high up in the Dikiti mountains. Wind mills are still used to pump water on to the crops, though diesel pumps are starting to take over.
As we climbed higher it soon became apparent that the weather was against us again as thje storm clouds blew in. Not wanting another wet ride I turned east and headed away from Lassithi , they will be down on the list for our next holiday.
The plan worked and we followed the sun along the edge of the mountain range. Flowers covered the mountain side as we wound our way from gorge to gorge some cut so deep they seemed bottomless.
After a couple of hours we found our way back to Agios Nikolaos and follwed the coast back to the apartment.
