16th February - San Juan

Angie feeling better and a blue sky so we packed up and got out quick for a day exploring down the coast as far as San Juan.
Ignored the satnav trying to put us on the motorway and followed the coast road hugging the cliffs and beaches much of the way.
Things take a turn for the worse as you approach Carboneras with its industrialisation  and quarries but once past that things improve. Going out the other side of the town the coast reminded me of Cornwall a little with the ocassional chimney and abandoned stone buildings sticking up from the cliff face. With a maze of old tracks crisscrossing the beaches and winding down the cliffs it's possible to pull in and have have whole bay to yourself. Not to remember this for future trips as definitely a place to wildcamp.
Passing through El Lance, another deserted wide expanse of sand you approach a very steep switch back section of road, reminiscent of an Alpine mountain pass. The road climbed to give magnificent views from Mirror Da La Granatilla, stopped for photo's but it was spoilt by huge amounts of graffiti over the rockface and street signs.
Moving on  inland for a few miles past beautiful traditional Spanish whitewashed villages we came back to the coast and stopped for lunch at Casttelo Macenas, an old ruined castle on the beach with access to vehicles.
We stayed for a while , had a walk along the beach before continuing past the beach resort of Mojacar and the port of Garrucha.
We passed several great deserted pull ins along the pine covered beaches,  ideal for wild camping as well as spots right on the rocky sections of seashore before pulling into San Juan.
Dissapointed with the town we found a local shop filled up with groceries and headed back to fid a spot for a late afternoon  cuppa.
Got back late in the pitch dark at 7.45 but managed to pitch up ok.
