Sun was up but with a heavy sky threatening rain. We stuffed some bits in the rucksack and jumped on the bus into Almeria. Its only a short ride into the town at a very reasonable €1.30 each. To get to the centre you walk up a beautifully laid out pedestrian area , full of water features and artworks with flower beds in full bloom with plants that we wouldn't see flowering in England until summer and the largest Ficus tree I've ever seen, easily comparable to a fully mature English Oak.
We walked on heading to the old quarter passing a stone built Cathedral the "Caterdral de la Encarnason" celebrating its 500th year and looking fantastic with elaborate stone carvings at the main entrance. The sun began to shine as we spotted La Alcazaba. As you would expect being a fortified building It stands at the highest part of the town approached via tiny narrow roads barely wide enough for a car to squeeze down.
The entrance is free if you hold an EU passport. I had read a little about the place back at home but didn't expect it to be so beautiful and peaceful. It was still early in the day so it wasn't busy adding to the atmosphere. Still under restoration in some areas while other parts such as the main tower and water gardens were finished and looking good in the sun. We wondered around for hours taking in the views across the old and new parts of the city looking like a colourful patchwork quilt.
Feeling hungary it was time to move on , well worth a re-visit and if your ever in the area make sure its on your list !
Walked back through the town grabbing some lunch and picking up some supplies for tea.we followed the remains of the old railway back to the port, its now been turned into yet another pedestrian walk linking the shopping area with the port.
Jumped aboard a bus and got back late in the afternoon, a quick shower and we sat outside watching another beautiful sunset while cooking pizza on the Safari Chef, definitely one of the best gadgets we had packed !
