We followed the shores of lake Ohrid taking note of a couple of camp sites to maybe use on the return leg. The roads around this stretch were amongst the worst so far. Very rough and breaking up, progress was slow. We then got lost in Korcasa, don't ask why as it was a very small town. Fun finding our way back on route via the back streets though with small kids smiling and waving at us.
The border crossing into Greece was just outside the town of Bilishti , yes I have spelt it correctly ! Following a small single track road for several miles I was convinced that we had taken a wrong turn. How can a border crossing be on such a minor road ? We turned a corner to see the road widen into several lanes feeding into the border. We waited in line with the other cars and lorries when a guard called us to come through the pedestrian crossing point. Interesting with a large bike and panniers but we fitted OK. Passports and bike papers checked and we crossed to the Greek side, quick look at the passports and then waved on to customs. Hung around for a while when an old Greek officer appears asking me where I was going, "Greece" I replied. Stupid thing to say I know but it was the first thing that popped into my head! The officer gave me a strange look as if I was taking the piss and I quickly added " and then in to Turkey" that didn't seem to help and he asked to see my papers again. He nodded and handed me them back asking to look inside the top box. " Its camping equipment " I said as I opened the lid for him to check. After a quick look around he gave us the OK and we crossed into Greece.
Within 5 mile or so the roads improved until our average speed was up into the 60's and we started to cool down a little. From here on to Thessaloniki was mostly motorway and uneventful. strange thing was that both Angie and myself felt a lot safer now we were in Greece, properly all in the mind.
